Peace Returns To Nasarawa After Consultations

Peace has returned to Nasarawa State after wide consultations and peace meetings aimed at bringing back peace to the state that experienced weeks of violence in November.

From Lafia, the state capital in Nasarawa Southern Senatorial District to Nasarawa Eggon in the north and Keffi in the western zone, indigenes now leave peacefully among themselves.

The relative peace was attained after the concerted effort of the state government, the traditional institution, security agencies and individuals who have all committed to living in peace with one another.

The Governor of the state, Tanko Al-makura in company of security agencies on Saturday visited crisis spots in the Southern and Northern Senatorial zones of the state.

Houses and local business had shut down in the wake of the violence, with no tribe spared of the ordeal. The Eggon’s, Alago’s, Fulani’s and Gwandara all counted loses.

A lot was at stake as hundreds were internally displaced, before the Governor, adopted the home grown peace mechanism to end the crisis.

One of the meetings leading to the attainment of the present state of peace and harmonious living was that of the traditional institution, with the Emir of Lafia, Mustapher Agwai, pledging total commitment to the peace effort.

The opposition party in Nasarawa State, the Peoples Democratic Party, had called for a state of emergency to tackle the crisis.

The call was regarded as unpatriotic by the traditional institution, with the Emir of Lafia calling for restraint.

For Governor Al-makura, the return of peace is sacrosanct, hence he would do anything to restore peace.

Mr Al-makura, who seem elated about the peace being enjoyed in the state, commended indigenes for giving peace a chance, which is said to be a prerequisite for societal development.
