South Africa has announced plans to leave the International Criminal Court (ICC) few months after refusing to arrest Sudanese president, Omar Al-Bashir as requested by the Court.
A deputy minister, Obed Bapela said on Sunday, that the ICC has “lost its direction” and that South Africa’s ruling party, the African National Congress (ANC) wants to withdraw the country after following certain processes.
Bapela spoke to newsmen after a policy meeting of the ANC.
Sudanese President Omar al-Bashir, accused of genocide and war crimes, visited South Africa in June, but was allowed to leave despite a Court order to detain him.
The South African government last week asked the ICC for more time to explain why it allowed this.
The ruling party this weekend however resolved to leave the ICC, with Bapela saying powerful nations “trample” human rights and pursue “selfish interests”.
