INEC wants to release Rivers LGA rerun result – PDP

THE Rivers State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party has alleged that the Independent National Electoral Commission is planning to announce a result of a rerun election it had earlier cancelled.

INEC had suspended the rerun election in Tai Local Government Area and seven other LGAs during the exercise that was held on March 19, 2016 following reports of violence.

The All Progressives Congress Forum of Chairmen, in the South-East geopolitical zone of the country, has said that the party will take over power in the five states of the zone in 2019.

The forum comprising of APC party chairmen in Abia, Anambra, Ebonyi, Imo and Enugu states respectively made the declaration in Abakaliki during the party’s zonal meeting on Saturday.

The umbrella body of Ijaw youths, the Ijaw Youth Council Worldwide, has debunked allegations by an ex-militant, Israel Akpodoro, that former President Goodluck Jonathan founded the Niger Delta Avengers, currently behind pipeline and oil installations bombings in the Niger Delta.

The former Minister of Education, Mallam Ibrahim Shekarau, has said his arrest and detention by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission has no political undertone.

Shekarau, also a former governor of Kano State, made the remark while addressing a news conference in Kano on Sunday.

Organized labour, yesterday, insisted it would shut down the economy from Wednesday, May 18, should the Federal Government fail to revert the pump price of petrol to the pre-May 11 price of N86.50, among other demands, by midnight of Tuesday, May 17. The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control, NAFDAC, has warned that consumption of imported frozen poultry products may lead to cancer, kidney diseases and hypertension.

Unfortunately, the warning has not deterred many Nigerians from consuming them. According to a former NAFDAC Director-General, Dr Paul Orhii, the risk in the products comes as a result of substances that can predispose one to kidney, liver and lung diseases as well as certain types of cancer and drug resistant bacterial infections among others.

A law was been passed in Saudi Arabia that will punish women by flogging or imprisonment if they check their husband’s phone without his consent.

Senior Saudi lawyer, Mohammad al-Temyat, has said the act is now a criminal offense and will be prosecuted as a violation of privacy because it is not covered in the country’s Islamic laws.

Temyat confirmed to a local newspaper that guilty persons would be brought before the court if a lawsuit was filed against them.

He said:

A group of Islamic State terrorists armed with AK-47s attacked the headquarters of a Real Madrid supporters club – because ‘they don’t like football’.

Three gunmen opened fire around midnight at the Al Furat cafe in Balad, 50 miles north of the Iraqi capital Baghdad. It is believed at least 14 people – mainly Real Madrid fans but also cafe staff and other customers – were killed and a further 28 people injured.

TheAssociation of Nigerian Students, NANS, on Thursday, May 12, has said that over 40 million Nigerian students would re-enact the Occupy Nigeria protest against the removal of subsidy from petroleum product next week.

A 14-year-old school boy has come up with a multi-million dollar idea – to create vending machines that dispense first aid kits.
Taylor Rosenthal, from Opelika, Alabama, then rejected a $30m offer from a ‘large national healthcare company’ in favour of holding on to his idea himself.

A Non-Governmental Organisation, Akwa Ibom Oil Producing Community Development Network, has urged the Federal Government to include oil-producing communities in its effort to clean up Ogoni land.

The AKIPCON stated that if oil-producing communities were included in the Federal Government’s environmental cleaning initiative, Mobil Producing Nigeria Limited would not have used chemical dispersants to clean up the spillage that took place on April 22.

I get confused these days reading many of the posts on social media, and text messages sent through cell phones, because of the kind of new English that young people now write. The English language is without doubt quite dynamic. In the last 200 years, it has lent itself to many innovations, as cultural, religious, and situational codes have transformed the language and extended the dictionary, with new words and idioms.
The kind of new English being written by twitter and what’s app users, particularly young people is however so frightening and lamentable, because it is beginning to creep into regular writing. Texting and tweeting is producing a generation of users of English, (it is worse that they are using English as a second language), who cannot write grammatically successful sentences. I was privileged to go through some applications that some young graduates submitted for job openings recently and I was scared.

In the light of the increase in the price of petrol from N86.50 to N145 per litre, oil workers in the country have called on the federal government to increase the new minimum wage from N18,000 to N90,000.While commending the Federal Government for removing subsidy on petrol, they said that they would push for a new minimum wage demand of N90, 000.
