Kano State Governor Rabi’u Musa Kwankwaso has appointed a Christian woman, Justice Patricia Mahmoud, to the position of Acting Chief Judge of the state.

According to Sahara Reporters, she has replaced Justice Shehu Atiku, who retired from judicial service after attaining the mandatory 65 years of age.
Speaking during the occasion, the governor explained that the appointment was in compliance with section 271 subsection 4 of the constitution. This document states that the most senior judge acts as Chief Judge pending the appointment of a substantive Chief Judge

Former President Olusegun Obasanjo

Former President Olusegun Obasanjo on Saturday made a surprise appearance at the church wedding of President Goodluck Jonathan’s foster daughter, Inebharapu.

Inebharapu was joined in holy matrimony to Simeon at a well-attended service held at the National Christian Centre, Abuja.
Obasanjo and Jonathan have not been seen together in public events lately, especially since the public presentation of his book, ‘My Watch.’

The Kano State Hisba Board said it had destroyed 326,151 bottles of beer out of the 363, 853 it confiscated from members of the public in the past three years.

This is contained in a statement issued in Kano on Saturday by the officer in charge of operation at the board, Alhaji Sani Nasidi.
The statement noted that the destruction of the illegal commodity was carried out in three phases within the period under review.

Cote d’Ivoire’s Prime Minister, Mr Daniel Duncan, said the country will strengthen its cooperation with the World Bank to foster more effective economic development.
This is contained in a statement from the government in Abidjan on Saturday which quoted the prime minister at a partnership enhancement meeting between the Ivorian government and the World Bank.

It said the meeting held in Abidjan on Friday was used to take stock of the quality of cooperation between the Cote d’Ivoire Government and the World Bank.

Customs' Boss Loses Father - Official.

The Comptroller-General of the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS), Alhaji Dikko Inde, has lost his father, Alhaji Abdullahi Inde, 93.

This is contained in a statement issued in Abuja on Saturday by the Service's Public Relations Unit.

The statement said that Inde died in his home town, Musawa, Musawa Local Government in Katsina State on Friday night after a protracted illness.

An Ethiopian Airlines Boeing 737-400 cargo plane en route from Lome airport, Togo, to Accra-Kotoka Airport, Ghana, crash-landed at its destination on January 10, 2015, Saturday.
According to aviation-safety, the jet has sustained substantial damage in a runway excursion during landing at about 11:05 (local time). The three crew members were taken to the 37 Military Hospital in the Ghanaian capital.

The National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, Alhaji Adamu Mu’azu, has said the former President Olusegun Obasanjo will work with for the victory of the party in 2015 elections.

According to Mu’azu, in spite of Obasanjo’s attack on President Goodluck Jonathan, he will work diligently for the party to win.
This was disclosed in statement yesterday by his Press Secretaty, Chief Tony Amadi, Vanguard reports.

Jonathan made the statement on January 9, 2015, Friday, at the PDP presidential campaign rally in Enugu, P.M. News reports.

The President assured that the best way to fight corruption was through improved technology and not by jailing people for 300 years.

Three members of the deadly Boko Haram sect who partook in recent attacks and killings around towns and villages of Borno State were arrested yesterday at a refugee camp in Maiduguri, Borno.

According to a statement by the Ekiti Police Public Relations Officer, Mr. Victor Babayemi, the victim, a great-grandmother was asleep when the suspect sneaked into her room, bolted the door and forcefully had carnal knowledge of her.

An unmanned Space Exploration Technologies Falcon 9 rocket blasted off from Florida on Saturday carrying a cargo capsule for the International Space Station, then turned around to attempt an unprecedented landing on earth.

While the cargo ship flies toward the space station, the rocket was expected to head back to a floating platform in the Atlantic Ocean some 200 miles (322 km) off Jacksonville, Fla., north of the Cape Canaveral Air Force Station launch site.

SOME 7,300 Nigerian refugees had fled from Nigeria to Chad in the past 10 days, Mr Farthan Haq, a United Nation spokesperson said on Saturday.

Haq said this when he spoke to newsmen in Abuja.

He said that the newly arrived refugees in Chad are staying with local communities in villages some 450 kilometers northwest of the Chadian capital, Ndjamena.

South African shares snapped a three-day winning streak on Friday, dropping 1.6 percent as investors took profit in Shoprite, Aspen Pharmacare and other index heavyweights that had clocked up recent big gains.

The Joint Health Sector Union (JOHESU) has vowed to sustain its strike in Katsina state despite threat by the State Government to withhold salary of members.
The union comprises nurses and midwives, health technicians and other health related workers.

The union's Secretary, Alhaji Sani Yusuf, stated this on Thursday in Katsina during in a press conference.

An explosion has gone off at the popular Maiduguri poultry market in which at least 10 people were killed when a young girl, thought to be aged about 10, blew herself up at a crowded market in the northeast.

Details of the incident are sketchy and the casualty rate is unclear. But the explosion has sparked panic across the Borno state capital, with some residents scampering home for safety.

Civilian vigilante Ashiru Mustapha said the powerful explosion rocked the market at about 12:40 pm when it was packed with traders and shoppers, adding that the girl "was about 10 years old".

WHO

The World Health Organization says the two leading Ebola vaccines appear safe and will soon be tested in healthy volunteers in West Africa.

After an expert meeting this week, WHO said there is now enough information to conclude that the two most advanced Ebola vaccines - one made by GlaxoSmithKline and the other licensed by Merck and NewLink - have "an acceptable safety profile."

Amokachi drops Osaguona as Eagles depart for friendlies

Daniel Amokachi, the Super Eagles assistant coach, has excluded Osaguona Ighodalo an Enugu Rangers striker, from the squad that will face Ivory Coast and Sudan in friendlies in Abu Dhabi next week.

The team left for the United Arab Emirates on Thursday.

A pregnant woman named Kudirat Bello has been sentenced alongside side 125 others to sped between one day and 15years in prison by Federal High Court sitting in Lagos.

Kudirat Bello, who was arrested by officials of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency, Lagos State Command, to be in possession 33.3 kilogrammes of cannabis, she was sentenced to one day imprisonment by Justice Musa Kurya, the presiding judge.

Some other convicts are Obinna Okeke 38-year-old, Salisu Usman 42-year-old, and 17-year-old Lanre Salami.

MTN and ETISALAT

MTN Nigeria and Etisalat Nigeria, have disclosed that they will be investing billions of dollars to improve on the quality of their services in the country after complaints from customers of poor quality of service.

While MTN said it would spend about $1.2bn (N216bn) to upgrade its network this year, Etisalat said its network rollout across Nigeria would continue this year with the $1.2bn medium-term syndicated loan facility it secured from a consortium of banks in 2013.

Mali named a new prime minister on Thursday with Modibo Keita taking over after Moussa Mara (pictured) resigned under pressure from the president of the strife-torn west African nation.

Modibo Keita, who has been leading peace negotiations with rebel groups, was appointed by President Ibrahim Boubacar Keita, according to a presidential decree.

Mara leaves the job after just eight months.

Two brothers suspected in a newspaper terror attack were cornered inside a printing house northeast of Paris on Friday, taking a hostage and telling police they "want to die as martyrs," a lawmaker said.

Security forces streamed into the small industrial town near Charles de Gaulle airport in a massive operation to seize the men suspected of carrying out France's deadliest terror attack in decades. One of the men had been convicted of terrorism charges in 2008, the other had visited Yemen and a U.S. official said both brothers were on the American no-fly list.

Matthew died in an isolation cell, after he "became combative during the booking process," according to a release from the Chatham County Sheriff's Office in Savannah, Georgia. During the altercation, officials say, three deputies were injured, including a female sergeant who suffered a concussion and broken nose.
