US Launches 23 Air Strikes Against ISIS In Syria, Iraq

            The United States and allies staged 23 air strikes on Islamic State targets in Syria and Iraq on Thursday, the Combined Joint Task Force said on Friday.

A dozen strikes near the Syrian cities of Kobani, Ar Raqqah and Al Hasakah destroyed Islamic State vehicles, buildings and fighting positions and also hit a large Islamic State unit.

Eleven strikes in Iraq targeted Islamic State units, buildings, vehicles, equipment, a shipping container and a weapons cache near the cities of Taji, Al Asad, Fallujah, Baiji, Al Qaim and Mosul.

AirAsia Flight QZ8501 Wasn't Authorised To fly

              AirAsia could be banned from offering flights in Indonesia, after it emerged that Flight QZ8501 was not authorised to fly on the day it plunged into the Java Sea.

The company also faces allegations that the pilot did not ask for a weather report from meteorologists before take-off, amid concerns that the Airbus A320 was downed in stormy conditions.

Indonesia's transport ministry has suspended all AirAsia flights between Surabaya and Singapore – the route where the plane went missing in the early hours of 28 December.

2015: We Won’t Set Up Clearance Committees Over Candidates’ Documents —INEC

             The Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, yesterday, said unlike the previous elections, it would not empanel clearance committees to scrutinize records of candidates seeking various elective offices in this year’s general elections.


The development is a complete deviation from the 2007 and the 2011 general elections where the commission set up verification committees to clear or disqualify candidates from the elections, after submission of their lists by the political parties.

Boko Haram Abducts 40 Youths In Borno

                Boko Haram militants have kidnapped a new set of youths, numbering about 40, in Malari village in southern Borno State, fleeing residents said today.

The Boko Haram group stormed Malari, in Damboa Local Government area, on the eve of the New Year at about 9pm and abducted the youths, who by some estimates were about 50.

Ali Mallami, who fled the area into Maiduguri, said the militants forcibly gathered all the males in the village supposedly for preaching, and thereafter left with many of them.

Desperate Parents Of Abducted Chibok Girls Turn To UN After Losing Faith In Government

              Parents of 200 Nigerian schoolgirls kidnapped by Islamist rebels in April said they were appealing directly to the United Nations for help after losing hope that the Nigerian government will rescue them.

A group lobbying for government action on behalf of the parents met with UN Women, the head of the UN representation in Nigeria, and with officials of the UN Office for West Africa last month.

The group has also appealed to Unicef, campaign spokeswoman Bukola Shonibare said.

General Buhari is contesting the presidential election for the fourth time under different political parties including the defunct All Nigeria People’s Party, ANPP and the Congress for Progressive Change, CPC, but the issue of his qualifications had never been controversial until the ruling Peoples’ Democratic Party, PDP, recently described him as a "semi- illiterate.’’

7 Year Old Girl Survives Kentucky Plane Crash That Killed 4, Police Say

           A 7-year-old girl walked away from a small-plane crash on Friday that killed four people in southwest Kentucky, according to the authorities.

The State Police said a Lyon County resident called the police after the girl showed up at his home in Suwanee, about a two-hour drive southwest of Louisville, saying that she had survived a plane crash.


The girl, who was not immediately identified, was taken to the hospital with nonlife-threatening injuries, the authorities said.

Italian Doctor Declared Ebola-Free


             An Italian doctor who contracted Ebola in November while working in Sierra Leone has been declared cured and been discharged from a Rome hospital.

Fabrizio Pulvirenti said at Spallanzani hospital on Friday that while he was gravely ill, he tried to mentally analyse his symptoms as a way to keep himself sharp.


The doctor, who worked with the Italy-based Emergency aid group, was given the same experimental drugs used in the US and other European countries to treat people infected with the virus, according to officials at the hospital.

482 Robbery Suspects, 214 Rapists Caught In 2014— Kano Police

               Kano State Police Command has disclosed that it had arrested 482 armed robbery suspects and recovered 85 arms and 546 ammunition in 2014.
This was declared in a press statement signed by the command spokesman, Assistant Superintendent of police (ASP) Musa Magaji Majia, and made available to newsmen in Kano. The Statement linked the achievement to the cordial synergy enjoyed with all sister security organizations.
He said, “the command was also able to recover 125 stolen vehicles abandoned during the period.”
Majiya added that the command also recovered 24 high-calibre Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs) in different locations in the state, stating that the command recorded tremendous achievement in crime prevention and detection.

Cameroon Recruits 20,000 To Fight Boko Haram

      Cameroon has said it is recruiting 20,000 more defence and security forces to fight Boko Haram following reports that the terrorist group, based in Nigeria, is recruiting young Cameroonians to fight for them.


This is just as nine persons were killed, including two suicide bombers, as multiple bomb explosions rocked Yobe and Gombe states on the eve and new year day, while 10 others were injured.

7 more bodies recovered from AirAsia crash, 16 total

           More ships arrived Friday with sensitive equipment to hunt for the fuselage of AirAsia Flight 8501 and the more than 145 people still missing since it crashed into the sea five days ago.

Indonesia's Search and Rescue Agency chief Henry Bambang Soelistyo said efforts would be stepped up as long as the weather allowed.

"We will focus on underwater detection," he said, adding ships from Indonesia, Malaysia, Singapore and the U.S. had been on the scene since before dawn Friday to try to pinpoint wreckage and the all-important black boxes— the flight data and cockpit voice recorders.

Cuomo, the three-term governor of New York who commanded the attention of the country with a compelling public presence, a forceful defense of liberalism and his exhaustive ruminations about whether to run for president, died at home in Manhattan on Thursday, according to a family friend. He was 82.

Mr. Cuomo, the father of Andrew M. Cuomo, who hours earlier on Thursday was inaugurated for a second term as governor, led New York during a turbulent time, 1983 through 1994. His ambitions for an activist government were thwarted by economic recession. He found himself struggling with the State Legislature not over what the government should do but over what programs should be cut, and what taxes should be raised, simply to balance the budget.

            The Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) in Kaduna State debunked reports that some Muslims protected Christians during Christmas celebration.
                     It would be recalled that earlier this week it was provided that 200 Muslim youths took part in Kaduna church services to protect Christians. The move was reportedly aimed at strengthening peaceful coexistence between the two groups.
                    However December 31, Reverend Sunday Ibrahim, the secretary of the Kaduna State chapter of CAN, made the refutation in a statement, Sahara Reported informs.
He disclosed that unlike claimed, the usual security agents were drafted for this mission.
