Ex-MEND militant condemns Avengers

A former member of the Movement for the Emancipation of Niger Delta, Tamunotonye Kuna, has condemned the fresh wave of militancy in the Niger Delta region.

Particularly, he condemned the activities of the Niger Delta Avengers, describing the members of the group as criminals, who had benefitted from the Federal Government’s amnesty programme.

Speaking with journalists in Abuja, Kuna stated that the group was keeping to its promise to make the region ungovernable should President Muhammadu Buhari win the 2015 general election.

While warning that the renewed violence in the Niger Delta region would further impoverish the people of the area, he advised the members of the NDA to embrace dialogue, adding that the Federal Government had proposed to restore peace to the region.

He said, “I was working with ‘General’ Farah Dagogo, a senior warlord in MEND. I have vowed never to return to the creeks because we have tried violence and it didn’t work. That is why we have resorted to peace.

“Ironically, the same group was the same people who benefitted from the government’s amnesty programme.”
