Nigerians Spend 1bn Yearly Testing DNA Samples Abroad

Guardian Newspaper’s investigation recently revealed that Nigerians are spending over a billion naira every year on getting results of DNA samples abroad.

This is as a result of the upsurge in paternity dispute cases, security agencies efforts to uncover perpetrators of crime and medical researchers efforts at foretelling future diseases.

The countries benefiting most from this medical tourism are South Africa, The United States of America and some European countries.

Sadly, this situation is a result of the near existence of a standard microbiology laboratory in Nigeria. Even the Nigerian Institute of Medical Research (NIMR), Yaba – the flagship research institute in the country can’t boast of one.
