It is widely believed that a speech by Zulu King, Goodwill Zwelithini started the violent xenophobic attacks foreign nationals by locals.
In the speech, the king had said that foreigners must pack up and leave the country.
The Zulu king lamented that fact that traders in the townships could not compete with the prices that foreign-owned businesses were selling their products.
He also complained about the fact that foreigners involved in crime as well as lacking respect to locals.

In the last two weeks of xenophobic rioting, several people have been reported dead.
The attacks began as a result of widely-held beliefs that the South Africa’s economic travails are being caused by foreign nationals.
About 100 foreigners have flocked to a Johannesburg police station to seek protection from the mob, while others sheltered in a community centre.
