A child rights organisation, Sterling Centre for Law and Development, has congratulated 14-year-old Ese Oruru, who was forced into marriage on the birth of a baby girl but called on government to rehabilitate her and institutionalise a process for her protection.
The SCLD, also suggested that government at all levels should take urgent steps to address the growing challenge of child rights violation across the country.
The coordinator of the centre, Deji Ajare, tabled the demands on Saturday in Abuja, during the second edition of a one-day summit which it organised in conjunction with the National Human Rights Commission for secondary school students in Abuja with the theme: “Protecting the rights of children in conflict situations.”
According to him, the summit is aimed at sensitising the students and all children in the country on their rights, adding that it is the first step towards addressing the menace of child rights abuse.
He said, “A 14-year-old girl shouldn’t be married because that is child abuse. She doesn’t have the power to give her consent to marriage. She is not biologically fit to mother a child. We had before condemned the act and called on the government to take action before her rescue. But unfortunately, the harm has been done.
“We congratulate Ese Oruru, for being alive, because many women, including adults, have died while giving birth. If she is safe and her child is alive, we must congratulate her. Government must step in to rehabilitate that girl and take care of the baby. It is important that government institutionalise a process to protect her. The government must do something to rehabilitate her.”
