Customs apologises for beating Lagos magistrate

The Nigeria Customs Service has apologised to the Lagos State Government over the conduct of some of its officials.

Our correspondent had reported on Monday, June 13, that some customs officers attached to the NCS, Federal Operations Unit, Ikeja, allegedly attacked a magistrate of the Lagos State Mobile Court, Lekan Aka-Bashorun, for impounding their vehicles.

It had also been reported that the customs officers allegedly slapped Aka-Bashorun, while policemen attached to the mobile court were attacked. Court exhibits and recording gadgets were reportedly damaged during the affray.

The NCS — FOU spokesperson, Uche Ejesieme, had told our correspondent that the customs authorities had met with the security agencies involved and resolved the matter amicably.

In a statement on Thursday, the state government said it had received a letter of apology from the NCS.

The statement added that the NCS promised that such an incident would not repeat itself in the state.

It read partly, “Sequel to a report by The PUNCH on June 13, 2016, about an attack by the men of the NCS, Ikeja, on the Lagos State Mobile Court and its members, we can authoritatively state that the NCS, Ikeja, in a letter dated June 15, 2016, to Governor Akinwunmi Ambode through the Attorney General of Lagos State and copied to the Chief Judge of Lagos State, has issued an apology for the incident.”

The statement further quoted the NCS as saying, “We unequivocally condemn it in the strongest terms and hereby wish to apologise without reservations. We assure you that such an incident will not repeat itself.”

The NCS reportedly promised to ensure the success of the mobile court task force in the state and take actions to that effect by dismantling the car wash near its premises.
