FORMER president, Olusegun Obasanjo, on Thursday stormed out of the venue of an event organised by the police in Lagos for not starting as scheduled.
The president though waited for the programme to commence and gave his speech, took a swipe at the police for not being serious. The event was the biannual special training and capacity building programme, organised by the zone 2 command of the Nigeria Police at the Federal Palace Hotel.
The former president ,who was at the venue for about two hours before the arrival of the Inspector General of Police, Ibrahim Idris, told the police to always be ready before calling him next time.
Chief Obasnajo wondered why he would be on the seat for more than one hour, before the leadership of the Nigerian Police Force would arrive at the scene.
It was however gathered that the Inspector General of Police was not aware that the former president would be the special guest of honour at the event.
It was further gathered that the chief host of the event, Kayode Aderanti, an Assistant Inspector General of
Police made the arrangement for the former president to appear as the special guest of honour at the event.
The former president, while speaking on the training, emphasised that there is no substitute to training and urged security operatives to be abreast of developments in other parts of the world.
Former president Obasanjo lashed out at the police, when he said “Please be ready next time you invite me to any of your events.”
“I broke out of a programme, which was taking place in Abeokuta involving UNESCO, 50 universities and 30 secondary schools and I decided to honour the police because of the respect I have for you and training of the officers,” Obasanjo said.
The former president also said “I believe there is no substitute to training for the military and paramilitary .When I hear that the police are embarking on this, I decided to come for a few minutes and encourage this training scheme”
He also said that every institution needs constant appraisal, regeneration of itself and training.
The former president also stated that “Police must be aware and in touch with new developments in other parts of the globe. I can see my former IGP Musiliu Smith.
“Smith is completely out of date to give lecture on police duty. He has experience to share with you, but not on modern way of doing things. I don’t even know how digital you (Smith) are.”
He however stormed out of the venue of the event while the programme was still on.
