Eman Ahmed Adb El Aty was flown to Mumbai’s Saifee Hospital on a specially modified plane for the bariatric surgery.
The 36-year-old had reportedly not left her home for 25 years before she was airlifted out of her bedroom by crane.
Ms Adb El Aty, who was diagnosed with elephantiasis, a condition that causes body parts to swell, as a child, has lost 15st (210lb) since arriving at the hospital in January, the BBC reports. Her surgeon, Dr Muffazal Lakdawala, believes his patient actually has lymphoedema, a long-term condition that causes swelling in the body’s tissues, which usually develops in the arms or legs.
“We are happy to inform all well-wishers that the medical team has successfully performed the surgery on Eman Ahmed,” the hospital said.
“Eman successfully underwent a Laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy on March 7. She had an uneventful surgery and anaesthesia course.
“She is now on oral fluids and accepting them well.
“The future course of action for the medical team working on her will be to correct all her associated medical problems to get her fit enough to fly back to Egypt as soon as possible.”
