We currently have the "Best Squad" in Madrid’s history – Raul

Zinedine Zidane’s La Liga and Champions League-winning squad of 2017 is “the best in Real Madrid’s history”, according to club legend Raul.

The former striker, who netted 323 times in 741 appearances for the club, played in some useful sides during his time at Santiago Bernabeu – winning six league titles and three continental crowns.

Madrid have also produced some of the finest teams ever seen, with their class of 1958 including Alfredo Di Stefano, Raymond Kopa and Francisco Gento – with Ferenc Puskas to arrive later that year.

Raul, though, believes that a group of players to have emulated the achievements of that iconic side by claiming a domestic and European double should be considered the greatest of all-time.

Reflecting on a Cristiano Ronaldo-inspired 4-1 victory over Juventus on Saturday, the ex-Spain international told BeIN Sports: “A League and European Cup Double after 59 years? What we have to do is try not to leave another double for so long. There are many challenges left.
“Next year, there are the European Super Cup, the Supercopa Espana, the Club World Cup… The important thing is for the team to keep their sense of union.
“I congratulate Zizou on how he’s managed this squad. [They must] keep working and fighting to continue giving joy to madridistas.
“I think this is the best squad in Madrid’s history, but the presence of Zidane is very important.
“He was the key element for how he managed everything. Without his humility and simplicity, it wouldn’t have been possible.
“Keeping 24 players happy is almost impossible and he’s succeeded in doing that. He deserves tremendous credit.”
Madrid are the first club to defend the Champions League title in its current format.

Their current squad do, however, have some way to go if they are match the legends of the 1950s, who collected five successive European Cups between 1955-56 and 1959-60.
