United Nations Under Secretary General for political affairs, Jeffrey Feltman.
Only days before the 2015 general elections, the United Nations (UN) has announced that it will soon release the sum of $60million (about N11.9billion) contributed by member states for Nigeria’s forthcoming elections.

Making the disclosure in Abuja on Thursday, March 19, 2015, was United Nations Under Secretary General for political affairs, Jeffrey Feltman, at the end of his two-day visit to Nigeria.

Speaking during his visit, Mr Feltman urged the political class in Nigeria to ensure that the coming elections are credible in line with the assurance given to the world, as portrayed by their assent to the Abuja Accord.

According to the UN under secretary general, the world is closely watching and looking up to the political class and all institutions responsible for the electoral process to make the forthcoming polls violence free.

“The UN will soon release to Nigeria’s concerned institutions, a $60million pool contributed by some member states to assist in Nigeria’s election process,” Mr Feltman said.

The UN chief noted that during his visit, he had meetings with the permanent secretary of the Presidency, the APC candidate, General Muhammadu Buhari, PDP national chairman, Ahmadu Adamu Muazu, the INEC chairman, Attahiru Jega, the director of the Department of State Security, the Police IGP and other institutions concerned with elections.

He said that they all assured him of credible elections as rescheduled for March 28 and April 11.

He said: “I look forward to conveying to the Secretary General, the assurances we received during my trip regarding holding elections in line with the new electoral calendar issued by INEC.”

Meanwhile, the UN Secretary General’s Representative to Nigeria, Mohammed Ibn Chambas, who was also at the media briefing, noted that African nations are in solidarity with Nigeria, saying “Nigeria should continue to lead by example. And this election is a test to that.”
