The Chief of Army Staff, Major General Tukur Buratai, has visited the troubled Yobe State in north-east Nigeria, to celebrate Sallah with troops fighting the Boko Haram insurgents in the region.
The Army Chief’s visit was part of strategies to boost the morale of the armed forces fighting terrorists in Adamawa, Borno, Yobe and few other northern States.
In an interview on Saturday in Damaturu, the capital of Yobe State, Buratai said his presence would stimulate military-civil relationship.
He also noted that his new position would afford him the opportunity to assess the equipment on ground and to evaluate the level of the threat posed by the Islamist militants.
The Army Chief, who had dinner with the troops tasked them to be professional and committed to the fight against the Boko Haram insurgency.
The Governor of Yobe State, Ibrahim Gaidam, was also at the celebration ground and he commended the Army Chief for the visit, expressing hopes that it would inspire the troops at the battle field.
The Governor also vowed that the Yobe State government would continue to support security forces towards regaining peace in the state.
He further praised the gallantry of the troops who are working diligently towards safeguarding the lives and property of the people.
Military troops have been deployed to the nation’s north-east in an attempt to contain the activities of the Boko Haram terrorist group that had carried out series of attacks on communities, places of worship and other public places. For more than five years, terror attacks have been sustained in the region.
Recently, the terrorist group has engaged more in suicide bombing, a development that security consultants said was a sign that they had been decimated by increased counter-terrorism operation witnessed before Nigeria’s general election of March and April."
