Godswill Akpabio, ex-governor of Akwa Ibom state, who now serves as Nigerian senator, has faced serious embarrassment at Mandarin Oriental Hotel, a luxury five-star hotel in the Knightsbridge area of London.
The credit card of former governor was denied as he tried to check in.
Akpabio had been in London to undergo medical treatment after car accident in Abuja that happened after his driver supposedly failed to stop at a traffic light.
At the reception of Mandarin Hotel, a hot and bothered senator was visibly humiliated on being told that his credit card had been declined.
Two unidentified people were with Akpabio at the reception as he looked troubled and upset about the credit card difficulty.
Former governor stayed at the reception desk for a while, seemingly at the demand of the hotel’s direction, who later checked him in.
Akpabio chose to be flown to the UK for aid after instead of receiving treatment in his multi-million dollar “world class” hospital in Uyo, the capital of Akwa Ibom.
The governor, when reached by journalists, confirmed that his card was denied because he had used the card to check out of the hotel earlier today. He noted that his credit card had soap out of its daily spending limit.
Akpabio has become a leader of the opposition Peoples Democratic Party in the National Assembly.
