A man tried to snatch Serena William’s phone from the seat next to her at a Chinese restaurant where she was having dinner on Tuesday, Nov. 3.
The tennis pro recounted how she used her “superhero” speed and agility to stop the would-be phone thief in an epic post on Facebook one day later, and the tale is definitely of superhuman proportions.
“Soooooo yesterday at dinner the CRAZIEST THING happened to me,” she began the story (Williams didn’t disclose what city she was in at the time.) “I was sitting enjoying some Chinese food (delicious may I add) and this guy stands next to me. It was only 2 of us sitting at a 4 person table just chatting like we have not seen each other in years.”
The 34-year-old athlete noted that she could sense that something “didn’t feel right” about a man who standing next to her, so her “SUPERHERO sense” told her to keep an eye on the shifty character.
“Then when least expected lo and behold this common petty thief grabbed my phone and swiftly left,” Williams wrote. “I looked at the chair, then shouted, ‘Omg that dude took my phone!!’ Not thinking I reacted (hence the superwoman photo) I jumped up, weaved my way in and out of the cozy restaurant (leaping over a chair or two) and chased him down.”
Williams hilariously noted that her “sprints came in handy” as she overtook the phone snatcher and then asked him in “the most menacing yet calm no nonsense voice” whether he had accidentally picked up the wrong phone.
At that moment, she wrote, her “superhero sidekick quailman” Facetimed her, making it impossible for the thief to lie his way out of his dubious deed. The tennis champ then turned around, phone in hand, and was greeted by a standing ovation upon her return into the restaurant.
“Superhero? Maybe? Or HELL YEA!!” Williams concluded. “I’ve got the speed the jumps, the power, the body, the seduction, the sex appeal, the strength, the leadership and yet the calm to weather the storm. Always listen to your superhero inner voice. Always keep your things close! Fight for what’s right. Stand for what you believe in! Be a superhero!”
