Justin Timberlake has hit a snag, as TMZ reported on Thursday that he and producer Timbaland, 44, are being sued by Cirque du Soleil.
The
performing troupe believe the 35-year-old sampled their song Steel
Dream for part of single Don’t Hold the Wall, from 2013 album the 20/20
Experience, according to the news site.
The single Justin and Timbaland allegedly sampled is from a 1997 album of the acrobatic troupe called Quidam.
Cirque du
Soleil wants a cut of all of the profits Justin and Timbaland made on
Don’t Hold the Wall, though it was arguably not the album’s best single.
The
20/20 Experience was a great return to music for the star, topping the
Billboard’s 200 Albums Chart and selling more than 2 million copies.
However, Don’t Hold the Wall never cracked the Billboard Hot 100 on its own.
The
suit was filed in federal court in New York, and saw the Canadian
theatrical performance company seeking a minimum of $800,000 in damages.
Earlier this year it was reported by TMZ
that Justin was being sued by 1970s group Sly, Slick and Wicked over a
vocal sample that had been used by him and Jay Z in single Suit &
Tie.
Reportedly the pair’s label had paid to sample the music, but not the vocals from the band’s 1973 hit Sho’ Nuff.
