The reboot of Disney’s animated classic “The Jungle Book” ranked top this weekend at the box office which was its second week on top. The movie which performed better than the $75 million predicted by analysts in its first week, raking in a whooping $103.6 million from April 15 when it opened in cinemas to Sunday, April 17, in the US and a roaring $240 million globally, made $60,803,000 this weekend.
Directed by Jon Favreau and written by Justin Marks (screenplay) and Rudyard Kipling (book), the re-make of the classic boasts a stellar cast of Hollywood’s finest, lending their voices to the characters we know and love. Bill Murray voiced Baloo, Lupita Nyong’o for Raksha, Idris Elba for Shere Khan, Scarlett Johansson for Kaa and many more with the character “Mowgli” played by Neel Sethi.
Critics have praised the movie for it visual effects as well as its loyalty to the source material which makes it appealing not only to kids but adults who remember the original. The film also scored an “A” CinemaScore with audiences and a 95% score on review site Rotten Tomatoes.
Jungle Book has the second highest April opening of all times topped only by Fast and Furious 7 which made $147.1 million on its opening weekend in April 2015.Barbershop: The Cut which was a distant second to The Jungle Book last week making $20,210,000 was displaced to third position by newcomer; The Huntsman: Winter’s War which raked in 20,080,000. Winter’s war is the second installment in “The Huntsman” series is both a prequel and sequel to Snow White and the Huntsman and stars familiar faces like Liam Kemsworth, Charlize Theron while bringing in Emily Blunt. Kristin Stewart who played Snow White and Rupert Sanders who directed the first installment did not make it into this one and owing to the cheating scandal that rocked the set as Rupert was replaced by Cedric Nicolas-Troyan.
