Calls for the removal of the Special Adviser to the President on Niger Delta and Chairman, Presidential Amnesty Programme, Brig.-Gen. Paul Boroh (retd.) have divided the Niger Delta former militants.
The pro-Boroh group, under the auspices of the Concerned Ex-Militant Leaders for Peace and Conflict Resolution, noted that the campaign against Boroh was an orchestrated plot by some politicians to truncate the amnesty programme.
State Coordinators of the group, Youpele James (Delta), John John (Bayelsa), Akapaka Lagos(Edo) and Pius Deinfagh (Rivers) on Thursday accused sponsors of the “Boroh must go” campaign as being behind the renewed insurgency in the region.
They urged President Muhammadu Buhari to shun the campaign against the Amnesty office and probe its sponsors.
The group said, ”These groups being used by their faceless sponsors and politicians are not known to the people of the Niger Delta.
“If they have the interest of the present administration at heart, they should have identified those behind the renegade militant groups and assist the security agencies.
“We wonder why they want to claim to know the terrain more than the son of the soil, Boroh, who has served Nigeria and the Amnesty office thus far.”
The group noted that Boroh’s handling of the Amnesty Implementation Committee showed that it fully aligned with Buhari’s anti-corruption stance.
But the Amnesty Beneficiaries for Progress, Peace and Development, described the recent call for Boroh’s removal as necessary to ending the renewed insurgency in the region.
The group called for a more pragmatic and focused person to interface between the administration and the security aspect of the amnesty programme.
The group led by ‘General’ Yebogha Ayibatare, aka Shooter, said that the upsurge in the destruction of oil platforms had exposed the amnesty programme to ridicule.
“Despite attempts by many contracted ex-militant leaders to launder the image of Boroh, the amnesty programme is enmeshed in crises.
The group argued, “Many ex-militant leaders have refused to share intelligence with the Amnesty office or the identity of those behind the renegade groups. If he (Boroh) is a man known and trusted, he should have been helping the Buhari administration with intelligence.
“The ongoing Amnesty Implementation under President Muhammadu Buhari is being poorly handled and has set off series of events that have forced us to open up.
“While some contracted ex-militants have become praise singers to the Paul Boroh led Committee and economical with the truth, the EGPPD has resolved to make it known that the Amnesty under him is divided into the Boroh-Boyloaf faction and the Niger Delta faction”.
It noted that Instead of ensuring a sincere and holistic implementation of the Amnesty deal, Boroh had allegedly promoted division among ex-agitators.
The group contended that the development had made some of them to become renegades and had started expressing their anger with bombings of pipelines and gas installations.
