A former Senate President, Adolphus Wabara, has said despite its challenges, the opposition Peoples Democratic Party can be likened to the proverbial beetle, which never dies.
Wabara, who said this in an interview with our correspondent in Abuja on Thursday while reacting to the crisis currently rocking the PDP, also called on the governors elected on the platform of the party to consult widely while taking decisions on the affairs of the party.
He explained that the party had sufficient internal mechanisms to deal with its issues as had been demonstrated in the past, noting that this time would not be different.
The former Senate President observed that the main demand of almost all of the party’s factions was for the former Chairman, Ali Modu Sheriff, to step aside and that since that had been achieved, most of them had commenced reconciliatory meetings.
He stressed that the insistence that the right things should be done gave rise to factions such as the PDP Rescue Group, which he belongs to, and the Prof. Jerry Gana-led Concerned PDP Stakeholders’ Forum.
Wabara added, “First of all, the PDP is just like a beetle. A beetle, they generally say, never dies. There is nothing that can kill the PDP, no matter the factional politics going on there now.
“So, we are looking forward to seeing how we can bring the factions together. We pray that this does not repeat itself. PDP is not owned by any individual or group of people or organisation. PDP is very national in nature.
“Since we lost the presidency, it would appear that the 12 governors that we have are in charge; but in the future, the governors should reach out and consult widely before they take certain decisions.”
