Manchester United defender Marco Rojo was pictured in tears at Manchester airport after learning the shocking news that his cousin had been shot dead in Argentina on Monday night.
According to reports in the country, Geronimo Rojo, 17, died in hospital after being shot by a man – who turned out to be an ex-policeman – he allegedly tried to rob at gunpoint.
An accomplice, 26-year-old Ivan Rodrigo Barbosa, also died.
Centre-back Rojo arrived at Manchester United’s Carrington training ground, understandably, with a grim look on his face.
Despite the shock news, Rojo has been named in Jose Mourinho’s squad for the daunting trip to FC Rostov on Thursday night.
It is not yet clear whether Mourinho intends to start Rojo, but the Argentinian has become first-choice under the Portuguese in recent months.
Both men are said to have targeted Raul Anibal Diaz, 50, around 10pm on Sunday night from a getaway motorbike outside a bank cash machine in the footballer’s native city of La Plata an hour’s drive south-east of the Argentinian capital Buenos Aires.
Local reports said the retired police officer identified himself before firing off several shots and fatally injuring the two men
Barbosa died at the scene minutes after being shot. Rojo was rushed to San Martin Hospital with a bullet wound to his shoulder but lost his fight for life some seven hours later.
