Four people injured in Oworonsoki ‘refrigerator’ explosion

lagosAn explosion whose source has not been confirmed, occurred Sunday afternoon in the Oworonsoki area of Lagos, reportedly leaving four people injured, several media reports indicate.

Vanguard reports that the explosion occurred inside a local bar (beer parlour) which was yet to open for business as at 2 p.m. around which time the incident occurred.

According to Punch, the South West Coordinator, National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), Mr. Ibrahim Farinloye, confrimed that there was an explosion inside a locked beer parlour that is yet to open today at L&K Street, Oworonsoki, inward Mayaki, Lagos State.

Farinloye said four people including a girl were injured and had been rushed to Afolabi Hospital for treatment.

“Fire service and police are trying to find out the cause of the explosion as the shop was locked at the time of explosion.

“Crowd are greatly impeding emergency works.

“We call on the crowd to leave the area entirely. The explosion partly affected a building next to the beer parlour. The partly affected collapsed building do not pose any danger to the people, ” he said.

According to Sahara Reporters, the explosion came from a leaking refrigerator within the locked shop.

The general manager of the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA), Mr Micheal Akindele reportedly said the agency can authoritatively link the explosion to a defective refrigerator in the shop.

Sahara Reporters claimed however that the refrigerator that reportedly caused the explosion remained largely intact.

Akindele had said gas escaped from the compressor of the refrigerator suspected to be defective and reacted with carbonated drinks in the shop.
