Corruption: Look beyond Jonathan govt, Baptist Church tells Buhari

President of the Nigeria Baptist Convention, Rev. Samson Ayokunle, has called on President Muhammadu Buhari to look beyond the government of former President Goodluck Jonathan in his fight against corruption.

The NBC president, who is also the Vice Chairman of the Christian Association of Nigeria, also charged the Federal Government to show serious commitment in its effort to put an end to the violent activities of the Fulani herdsmen, saying that if the group was not checked, it could grow to become a serious threat to national security and unity, beyond the threat of Boko Haram.

Ayokunle said, “I wish to commend the Federal Government under the leadership of President Buhari for remaining focused in the war against corruption in Nigeria. However, as others have observed, this fight has to be more embracing beyond the last administration in Nigeria.

“Corruption at the council and state levels ought to be probed as well in order for justice to be done. We urge the present administration to use the funds recovered from corrupt people to develop the almost non-existent infrastructural amenities in the country.”

While condemning the creation of grazing reserves across Nigeria and warning that herdsmen were fast transforming to a terrorist group, the CAN Vice Chairman said the current government must learn from the mistake of the last administration that failed to take quick steps to stop Boko Haram before it became too formidable to confront.

“We want to observe that creating grazing reserves in different parts of the country will create more problems than it is solving. Acquiring the land that belongs to other ethnic groups for Fulani herdsmen will amount to oppression. It is also a form of forceful occupation just like colonialism. If the herdsmen become permanent settlers in different parts of Nigeria, they will multiply and become more dangerous,” he said.

The NBC president also called on states and local governments to address the issue of non-payment of workers’ salaries while equally urging all tiers of government to create enabling environment for job creation.
