Some students of Iwo Baptist High School caused a mild stir when they arrived the premise of their school donning church robes on Tuesday. This was a result of the directive from Osun State Christian Association of Nigeria, which stated that all Christian students in public schools in the state should wear their church garments to schools, in reaction to a court ruling allowing Muslim female students to wear veils (hijab) to schools.
At the commissioning of St Micheal’s Government Middle School, Ibokun, yesterday June 14, Gov. Rauf Aregbesola reacted by saying students who wore unauthorised cloths to any public schools in the state would be expelled henceforth. According to him, it was wrong and criminal for a section or group of people to have directed some innocent students to wear choir robes to schools against court’s judgment.
He urged whoever was not satisfied with the judgment to ventilate the grievance through legitimate means rather than trying to cause crises by resorting to self help. Aregbesola also stated that the Government is not interested in any religion as being speculated and his goal is to improve education standard in the state.’
