Two buildings firms have been heavily fined after a worker received life-changing injuries in a huge electric shock - and only survived because of a quick-thinking colleague.
Mark Bradley, 52, suffered severe burns to his face, legs and arms when the lamp post he was helping to put up came into contact with an overhead electrical cable.
The father-of-four only survived the terrifying incident thanks to colleague Ade Savage, who hit him with the plank to release his grip from the electrified metal post.
And now building firms BAM Construction Limited and Shoreland Projects Limited have been slapped with a fine of almost £300,000 for failing to take measures to prevent the incident.
Winchester Crown Court heard how BAM had been appointed by Network Rail to construct a £10m railway operating centre in Basingstoke, Hampshire.
Shoreland Projects Ltd were later appointed as groundworks contractor for the project.
In January 2015, when work began to install lamp posts on the site entrance road, the fifth post touched the 11kilovolt overhead power lines when it was being lifted into position by an excavator.
This caused Mr Bradley, of Gosport, to suffer a massive electric shock.
The 52-year-old was rushed to Southampton General Hospital, where he was treated for the burns to his arms and face and also assessed for any internal injuries.
Mr Savage, who was called a hero at the time after his quick-thinking, also required hospital treatment for burns after he was electrocuted trying to pull Mark away from the lamp post before he hit him with the plank of wood.
After being placed in an induced coma, Mark now relies on a mobility scooter to get around and his fiancee Karen Morby has had to become his full-time carer.
Ms Morby, 40, said: 'This has changed our lives considerably.
'I have had to become Mark's full-time carer and he will never return to work. We now struggle to pay the mortgage because neither of us is working.
'Mark suffered severe burns to both his legs, his face and his arms and right hand. He also had to have a cataracts operation because the severe heat caused damage.
'He spends almost all his time in pain because of the accident that happened.'
