If organizers of the Grammy Awards fail to overhaul the voting process, Rapper Kanye West may have to boycott the prestigious platform next year.
“There has to be some level of respect for the people that they have there to sell advertising for them,” he told radio host Ryan Seacrest.
The talented rapper wants the award selection to reflect commercial success of award nominees. Kanye West caused a scene when Becks’ album was picked ahead of Beyonce as the Album Of The Year.
Soon after the broadcast, West said that Beck should “respect artistry” and give his award to superstar Beyonce for her self-titled album, one of her most intense works which features the ode to marital bliss “Drunk In Love” sung with husband Jay-Z.
A 21 Grammy
Award winner, West also faulted past Album of the Year awards to French electronic duo Daft Punk and Canadian indie rockers Arcade Fire.
But his G.O.O.D Music artiste, John Legend does not share the same view with his boss. He took to instagram to express his independent views. Said he, “Beck is indeed a true artist’s artist. He’s a multi-instrumentalist, a creative and unique singer-songwriter whose music I have bought and enjoyed over the years. While his win may have been a surprise to many, it’s not because he’s not a great artist deserving of recognition.
“All of the other nominated artists, including Beyonce, are incredible in their own right, and arguments could be made for any of them deserving to win. This is not an objective process. It’s completely subjective, in fact. We can all debate who we thought should have won. But even if you didn’t vote for him, plenty of our colleagues in the music business did. These voters are all creators who love music and have dedicated their lives to it, and the plurality of them chose Beck as the Album of the Year. I respect their decision and congratulate Beck on this outstanding accomplishment,” Legend added.
The Grammys are awarded through voting by industry professionals. The rival American Music Awards are determined based on popularity and most recently named British boy band One Direction as Artist of the Year.
Beck — whose music has captivated critics with his merging of styles and ironic touches — was diplomatic about West’s criticism. Beck told Us Weekly that he had expected Beyonce to win and that West “deserves to be on stage as much as anybody.”
