Nigerian Mediators And Conciliators Task Politicians On Tolerance

The Institute of Chartered Mediators and Conciliator (ICMC) has called on politicians not to push the country into anarchy by what they say and do.

President, of the institution , Mr Louis Ogbeifun, who addressed journalists in Abuja, said that politicians and leaders should at all times endeavour to ‎have respect for the rule of law, cultivate the skills of effective listening and tolerance.

According to him, lack of these basic leadership skills and qualities is threatening the collective existence of the Nigerian people.

Ogbeifun contended that some of the issues that have snowballed into this campaign of hate and severe divisions in the political associations were avoidable.

He called on political parties to use the opportunity provided by the rescheduled elections to educate their members at the grass roots. And also embrace mediation to solve political problems.

While calling on the international community to assist Nigeria to come out of “this insurgency and political tension period”, he warned that “no country within the sub region can accommodate the population of Nigeria if Nigeria is allowed to crumble.”

The Institute of Chattered Mediators and Conciliators (ICMC) is the professional body responsible for the training, regulation and development of the practice of Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR), especially Mediation and Conciliation in Nigeria.

The Institute promotes peace building strategies in private and public sectors of the economy."
