Ahead of the Saturday’s presidential election, leaders of the Economic Community of West African States are meeting with the main contenders in Abuja.
ECOWAS Chairman, President John Mahama of Ghana and the President of the ECOWAS Commission, Desire-Kadre Ouedraogo, are meeting with President Goodluck Jonathan at the Presidential Wing of the Nnamdi Azikwe International Airport, Abuja.
The delegation will also meet with Jonathan’s main contender, Gen. Muhammadu Buhari (retd.) of the All Progressives Congress later in the day at a different venue in the nation’s capital.
A similar meeting is expected to also be held with the Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission, Prof. Attahiru Jega.
The separate meetings, our correspondent learnt, were meant to extract commitments from the contenders and the nation’s authorities that the elections will be credible and hitch-free.
“This election is of interest, not only to Nigerians but also to the international community. ECOWAS, as a regional organisation, cannot but be interested in the smooth conduct of the polls. That’s why the leadership is engaging in this last-minute interventions,” a top government official said."
