Ahead of the Saturday’s presidential election, combat-ready soldiers were on Tuesday deployed in areas considered as flashpoints in Kaduna State.
Troops from the Nigerian Army were spotted by our correspondent erecting makeshift tents at LEA Primary School Malali, St. Rita’s Catholic Church, Unguwn Yaro; Unguwan Kudu, Unguwan Sunday and Rigachukun areas of the state.
At Mando Motor Park, Hayin Banki and the Western Bye-pass, men of the Nigerian Air Force were stationed there.
One of the soldiers, who spoke on condition of anonymity, simply told our correspondent that they were on “special duty”, feigning ignorance when the ‘special duty’ would end.
The police in the state had intensified patrols within the metropolis and areas such as Alkali Road, NEPA Roundabout and Golf Course Road,Isa Kaita Junction.
They also stationed patrol vehicles at Police College/Constitution Road, Barnawa.
Meanwhile, the police in Kaduna halted a planned rally against violence organised by the Universal Initiative for Citizens’ Rights Enlightenment and Empowerment in the state on Tuesday.
Members of the group gathered at the Murtala Square when men from Gabasawa Division, led by the Divisional Police Officer, Aminu Lawan, arrived the venue and asked the organisers to disperse.
It was learnt that the organisers did not obtain police permit for the rally.
But the Executive Director of the group, Ibraheem Waziri, told journalists that he wrote on March 23, 2015 to the Commissioner of Police, Kaduna State Command, notifying him of the rally and got a ‘verbal permit’ to go ahead.
He said,“The rally is a peaceful rally for campaign against election violence and the procession was interrupted, members intimidated and harassed by the Nigerian Police Force.
“The incident of post or pre-election violence happens more frequent in Kaduna State than any other states in the federation and one may not be far from the truth to say the occurrence of election violence in Kaduna automatically means a prospect of election violence in all other states of the federation."
