He’s always pushing boundaries, and now Kanye West has given new meaning to ‘drop the mic’.
The rapper, 38, was headlining the closing ceremony at the Pan Am Games in Toronto, Canada on Sunday and was in the middle of an energetic performance, when his microphone cut out due to technical issues. The malfunction caused perfectionist West to throw his mic into the air and leave the stage just 13 minutes into his set at the Rogers Centre. His sudden exit confused the stadium crowd, who couldn’t hear anything due to the technical issues.
However, the TV audience watching at home had a different experience, as they were still able to hear the sound up until the point he walked off stage, reports The Huffington Post.
CBC, the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation, later tweeted the problem was due to ‘technical issues’.
And a representative for Pan Am has told Mail Online that the rapper was only supposed to be on stage for the short, alloted time period, and that they were ‘thrilled’ with his performance.
As this was a live broadcast, Kanye West was always scheduled to perform for 13 minutes. He fulfilled this commitment in great style and while there was technical difficulty at the end due to circumstances beyond anyone’s control, he rolled with it the way great artists do.
To imply that he abruptly cut short his performance or that he was anything less than professional is incorrect. We could not have been more thrilled,’ said Neala Barton, SVP Communications and Media Relations in Toronto.
Despite the troublesome microphone, West thrilled the audience with a short-but-electric performance, jumping and leaping into the air and giving his all to the 40,000-strong crowd. Kudos to him.
