SEE How Many Workers Lost Jobs During Buhari’s First 100 Days In Office

The Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC) revealed that about 60,000 Nigerians in the engineering and construction sector lost their jobs following the suspension of infrastructural development by President Muhammadu Buhari.

Channels TV reports that Amechi Asugwuni, the president of NLC’s affiliate union, National Union of Civil Engineering and Construction Workers, made the disclosure at a press briefing on Tuesday, September 8, in Lagos.

Asugwuni called on the federal government to channel the same effort in fighting corruption on infrastructural development to create jobs for the unemployed population.

“It has become critical and we are still lacking answers because we have not seen the plan for infrastructure. Fight against corruption is like fight against indiscipline, which must continue side-by-side with development.

“We believe that Mr President should as a matter of fact reactivate all the ongoing projects across the nation. The reactivation is to reactivate the employment of Nigerians,” he said.

The union leader asked the Buhari-led government to appoint a committee that will monitor projects and contracts and entrench labour friendly policies.

Earlier this week, the NLC and the Trade Union Congress called for capital punishment for anyone found guilty of corruption.

Declaring support for Buhari’s anti-corruption campaign, the NLC’s president said: “If capital punishment was introduced and worked elsewhere to eliminate corruption, then we are for it. If it worked in China, we must be ambitious enough to move beyond our lamentation to arrive at our destination.
