The explosion took place near the children’s rides at the family park, where many were celebrating Easter.
“A large number of people, majority of them women and children, were present in Gulshan-e-Iqbal Park in Lahore when the suicide bomber blew himself up,” Lahore police chief Dr. Haider Ashraf said, according to NBC News. “Mostly women and children are killed and injured in the blast.”
The police chief added that “large number” of Christians celebrating the holiday were present in the park.
Police officials have recovered the body
of the suicide bomber, who “seems to be between 25 and 30 years old,”
according to police superintendent Mustansar Feroz.
“We are in a state of emergency,” Punjab health minister Salman Rafique added. “All the hospitals are under emergency. All ambulances had been called to the site of the blast, as a large number of people … are injured.”
The blast comes just days after deadly
explosions at Brussels Airport and the Maalbeek metro station killed at
least 31 people and injured more than 300. ISIS later claimed
responsibility for the attacks, which killed Americans Justin and
Stephanie Shults and siblings Alexander and Sascha Pinczowski.
