Doctor hides dead mother in closet for 10 years because he wanted to sue oil company

A man was charged with murder after his dead mother was found in the closet of his home, prosecutors in Nigeria said.

Now, the Imo State High Court acquitted 64-year-old Dr. Chimezie Osigwe in connection with the death of 78-year-old Lucy Osigwe.

The court ruled that the prosecution failed to provide enough evidence that the defendant murdered his mother. Osigwe claimed that his mother died during an earthquake.

He kept her in his closet for 10 years because he contemplated suing an oil company that he believed was responsible for her death.

Police said that the were no signs of violence on the woman’s body.

“I did not kill my mother. She went to the bathroom to relieve herself, and the wall fell on top of her during the earthquake caused by oil drilling. I reported the matter to the police and autopsy was performed on her. I embalmed because I wanted to sue the oil company,” Osigwe said.
