Oil Workers May Suspend Nationwide Strike

There are indications that the oil workers unions may suspend their nationwide strike, which has been on since Monday.

The oil workers have been locked in a close-door negotiations in Abuja with the Federal Government delegation led by the Supervising Minster for Labour, Tanimu Turaki, since 5 p.m. yesterday (Thursday).

Our correspondent, who has been monitoring developments at the meeting, says the National Public Relations Officer of PENGASSAN, Emmanuel Ojugbana, earlier today addressed journalists at the venue.

Mr Ojugbana offered some hope that the two sides have held fruitful discussions and will soon issue a communique on the decisions they have arrived at.

Nigerian Oil workers had commenced an indefinite strike to protest alleged unfair labour practices and non-passage of the Petroleum Industry Bill.

According to officials of the Nigeria Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas Workers (NUPENG) and the Petroleum and Natural Gas Senior Staff Association (PENGASSAN), the government has refused to implement agreements reached with the unions on these issues.
