Members of the All Progressives Congress (APC) and the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Rivers State staged protests at the gates of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) over alleged partiality of the electoral body.
While the APC supporters and other sympathizers from some other political parties in the state claim that INEC has recruited ad hoc staff that are card carrying members of the PDP.
The PDP supporters say they have uncovered a game plan by the electoral body to short change Nigerians in favour of the APC.
Some of the inscriptions on the placards carried by PDP supporters read: ‘INEC, you are working for APC,’ ‘INEC, we need a free and fair election,’ ‘We will not accept fake results,’ and ‘INEC, you are partial.’
Similarly, the placards of APC supporters read, ‘Rivers REC, are you a member of PDP?’, ‘We need unbiased umpire in Rivers,’ ‘Rivers people will resist any attempt to manipulate the electoral process,’ ‘INEC, your secret agenda with PDP has been exposed,’ and, ‘We want a free and fair election in Rivers.’
Reacting to the incident, the INEC Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC), Dame Khan, said the allegations by PDP and APC supporters only confirms the neutrality of the electoral body.
“The PDP and the APC have been complaining. I am happy that since the APC and the PDP are accusing me of being partial, that means that I am neutral.” she said."
