A 30-year-old businessman, Chinedu Nweke, who was alleged to have defiled a 6-year-old girl (name withheld) at Agboju Amuwo, Lagos, has been arrested by the Police at Festac Zone E. It was gathered that the victim who lost her mother, had left her father in the village who could not take care of her and her two elder siblings, to live with her aunt, a police officer.
Vanguard learned that on the day the incident occurred in February 2015, the suspect, a trader at Ladipo market and a neighbour to the victim, sent the little girl’s elder brother, 7, on an errand and defiled the girl before her brother returned from the errand. It was also gathered that the victim, a primary one pupil, became physiologically traumatised, ill, had poor appetite, experienced vomiting and poor self-esteem after the defilement. Vanguard gathered that the little girl’s aunt, a law enforcement agent, did not arrest the suspect but rather connived with him and shielded him from punishment, having collected money from him for treatment of the victim.
Residents in the area who spoke on condition of anonymity, said the aunt had been threatening the elder sister of the victim that she would throw them out of her house if the public got to know about what happened to the little girl.
However, when the Coordinator of Lagos State Domestic and Sexual Violence Response Team, DSVRT, Mrs. Titilola Vivour-Adeniyi, heard about the case, she contacted the DPO of Festac Police Division, and forwarded all the relevant information to get the suspect arrested.
It was later gathered that the suspect who was planning to elope, was eventually arrested on October 18.
DSVRT said its next step was to ensure the victim received all the necessary medical care, while the DPP will call for the duplicate case file to be forwarded to the office for prosecution.
