Nigeria’s Golden Eaglets have progressed to the last eight of the ongoing FIFA U17 world cup after mauling Australia 6-0 in their round of 16 game early Thursday morning.
The defending champions kicked off their campaign with two wins from the group stage but crumbled under the annointing of the croatian national team the second time between a month- first in a pre-tournament championship in Korea.
Victor Oshimen opened scoring for the Nigerian contingents in the 22nd minute of the game after two clear wasted efforts by the Aussies in the game.
Three minutes later, the team’s captain, Kelechi Nwakali doubled Nigeria’s lead from the penalty spot after Bamgboye fouled in the box recklessly by two onrushing defenders.
Victor Osimhen, who is the top scorer at the moment, scored Nigeria’s 3rd goal of the night, his second in the game in the 73rd minute and completed his hatrick 6 minutes later.
First, substitute Essien was on hand to head home from close range before Chukwueze’s missile completed the rout against the side who came into the game with the ambition of breaking their jinx against the defending champions.
The Golden Eaglets, who have now scored 14 goals, have set up a date with Brazil in the quarter finals on Sunday in their attempt to retain the title they won two years back at the United Arab Emirates.
