Coastguard and expert divers battled hard to save the life of the 30-tonne mammal but in the end there was nothing they could do to coax it back into deeper water.
The bull whale was stranded beneath cliffs along the coast at Hunstanton, in Norfolk, and died an hour and a half before low tide just before midnight, after becoming trapped on Friday afternoon.
According to Daily Mail, it was one of up to six sperm whales which were first seen dangerously close to the shore in shallow waters off Hunstanton at 3.30pm.
