Narendra Kumar had suffered from chronic stomach pains, vomiting and permanent weight loss since childhood until one day…
The 18-year-old was rushed to hospital with acute pain in abdomen and after thorough medical investigation was diagnosed with a rare condition called foetus in fetu. It means Narendra was born with a malformed twin brother inside his body, who had been feeding off him all his life.
The parasite formed an umbilical cord-like structure and managed to grow up to 20kg and even developed teeth and 2m long hair. Dr Rajeev Singh, who performed a surgery to remove the unusual growth, later commented on the incident:
“The boy’s stomach grew, but his plight went undiscovered for years because neither his parents were of his medical condition nor the doctors could diagnose the condition at an early stage. Technically, the foetus was alive and was growing due to metabolic activity in his body.
In the three hour-long surgery, we removed a mass of malformed baby having hair, teeth, a poorly developed head, a bony structure of chest and spine with lots of yellowish amniotic like fluid in the sac. We have witnessed two to three cases like this in India so far.”A parasitic twin is the result of the processes that also produce vanishing twins and conjoined twins, and may represent a continuum between the two. The undeveloped twin is defined as parasitic because it is incompletely formed or wholly dependent on the body functions of the complete fetus.
