Stop deceiving Nigerians, Akinde tells leaders

The Diocesan Bishop of Lagos Mainland, Anglican Communion, Prof. Adebayo Akinde, has urged Nigerian leaders to be transparent and stop falsehood in governance.

Akinde said since the leaders got elected by the masses, it was their duty to be accountable and deliver on their campaign promises.
The bishop said this in Lagos on Tuesday while addressing journalists ahead of the fourth synod of the Diocese of Lagos Mainland scheduled to hold between Thursday, May 26 and Sunday, May 29, 2016.

The cleric condemned corruption in public offices and asked Nigerians to hold their leaders accountable.

He stated, “We have a history of bad governance in Nigeria. I am not sure much has changed. Politicians get to power and rarely focus on initiating policies that would enhance the well being of their people. The cost of governance is ridiculously high.

“God gave us oil in this country but we abandoned our traditional means of economic power, which is agriculture. There is no degree of development in the areas of power, water supply, education, health and so on.

“Every falsehood in governance must stop. We have the responsibility to warn individuals that God hates iniquity and the wages of sin is death.”

Speaking on the hardship being witnessed by Nigerians as a result of the fuel price hike, the cleric urged Nigerians not to lose hope.

Akinde, who would be retiring from the priesthood soon, said he was thankful to God to have weathered the storm over the years.

He added, “We are pleased to announce that the first session of the fourth synod of the Diocese of Lagos Mainland will start on Thursday, May 26, 2016, at 4pm in the Cathedral of St. Jude, Ebute Meta, Lagos. On Friday, May 27, 2016, the official opening of the synod session will take place.

“We thank God that the Diocese of Lagos Mainland, Anglican Communion, will be 10 years old on August 23, 2016, having been inaugurated on August 23, 2006.”
