Efforts are on to draw the attention of Nigerians to the high risk of cancer and other hazardous effects through the exposure to cheap cooking oil that might be contaminated with polychlorinated biphenyls, a cancer causing agent.
Polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBS) are a class of hazardous chemicals banned world over in 1979 for adverse effects such as cancers, birth defects, dysfunctional immune and reproductive systems and diminished intelligence especially in children.
There is a four year research project being executed in conjunction with the World Bank to the tune of $6.3 million aimed at creating awareness so that Nigerians can stay protected from these hazards until a complete mop-up.
