But three days later the teenager's parents were shocked to learn she'd been handed a one-day suspension for flouting rules about appropriate prom attire.
They claim Alexus was targeted because she's "plus-sized" and "not flat-chested" and it's understood the school has since reversed its decision after a social media storm.
Alexus's mum Alisha Sneed, who designed the dress with her daughter, said she couldn't see what was wrong with it.
Suspended: The school objected to Alexus' dress
"I strongly feel there was nothing wrong with her dress," she told Penn Live.
"My daughter's dress was tasteful and classy."
The school demands that prom dresses be approved in advance.
Ms Sneed said she and her daughter added long sleeves to the dress and fabric to the front after the dress was initially rejected by school officials.
She said she called the principal twice last week to discuss the modification, but never heard back, and other dresses at the prom were more revealing.
Ms Sneed believes her daughter was singled out because of her size and Alexus was reportedly told she was too busty by her assistant principal.

The dress: The teen's family were shocked by her school's reaction "She
said, 'You have more boobs than other girls,'" Alexus said."The other
girls have less to show.'"The school’s decision later attracted angry
responses on social media. It's been reported that a school administrator
later cancelled the referral for the suspension, meaning Alexus would
not have to serve it.But this has not been confirmed by the school.
