An attempt by unknown gunmen to allegedly assassinate an All Progressives Congress (APC) chieftain in Rivers state, Mr. Chikordi Dike, has been foiled the Nigeria Police.
According to Vanguard, the incident claimed the life of one of the officers.
There had been reports that armed men had allegedly attempted to kill Mr. Dike who was once a Caretaker Committee chairman of Obio/Akpor Local Government Area of the state.
It was disclosed that the suspected assassins ambushed and unleashed attacks on their victims around Polo Club in GRA phase 2 and battled the single policeman attached to the APC chieftain.
A senior police officer however gave the name of the late officer as Corporal Yakubu.
Yakubu was shot-dead around 11pm, Tuesday December 24, after the criminals overpowered him as he tried to repel them from harming his boss.
Efforts to contact the Rivers State Police Command on the matter are yet to acknowledged.
