Obiano Lifts Ban On Okada, Keke Movement In Anambra

Governor of Anambra State, Chief Willie Obiano, has lifted the seven month embargo he placed on private and commercial motorcyclists and tricycles popularly called Okada and Keke operators in the state.
Gov. Obiano had on June 1 restricted the movement of Okada and Keke operators in some parts of the state in response to the growing rate of accidents and armed robberies involving the use of these modes of transportation.

However, in a statement issued by the state’s Com­missioner for Information, Culture and Tourism, Mrs. Uju Nwogu in Awka, the state capital on Friday, Obiano said that the deci­sion to lift the ban was to ease transportation dur­ing the Christmas and other festivi­ties.

The statement quoted the governor as saying Okada private motorcycle riders, as well as Keke operators can now freely ply all the roads in the state except the Enugu-Onitsha express road and Onitsha-Owerri express road.

“However, this removal of restric­tion is on the condition that every motorcycle rider must wear a crash helmet and carry one passenger only at a time”, he said.

Mr. Obiano advised the motor­cycle operators to procure crash hel­mets, warning that the law enforce­ment agents would commence arrest of defaulters soon.
