Three policemen and two civilians were on Saturday, December 19, killed by unidentified gunmen at the residence of a Lebanese man at Buba Shongo estate in Gombe state.
According to the spokesman of the Gombe state police command, DSP Fwaje Atajiri, the gunmen stormed the area around past 7pm on foot, opening fire on the policemen manning the residence, even as two other civilians were caught in the cross-fire.
According to Nigerian Pilot, DSP Atajiri revealed that the police has launched investigation into the matter, but arrests were yet to be made.
He informed his audience that the Police would not relent in performing its duties until justice is done, while assuring that the police are ready to protect lives and properties of citizens.
Describing the incident, he said: “There was a shootout at an area of Buba Shongo where some expatriates are staying. The shootout took about 35 minutes and in the course of the shootout; we lost three of our Policemen.
”There was another person that died and another civilian. The other (Police) one put up a spirited fight to repel them, ensured none of the riffles got lost and some of them escaped with bullets wounds.
“It was a very strong attack, but we gave an equally strong response; and of course that was why they attackers could not lay hands on any our weapons or take any property within the area”.
A source told Peoples Daily that the gunmen murdered the policemen without taking away their rifles. He said the gunmen who were numbering ten came by foot and called one of the deceased to open the gate for them before opening fire on him.
He said no one could tell whether the assailants had a mission to kidnap the Lebanese that owned Triata Construction Company in Gombe.
Meanwhile, tension is said to be building up in Gombe state, following continued protest by Shi’ites in the North east state. Sources reveal that for close to four days, Shi’ite faithfusl have been protesting against the massacre of their fellows in Zaria, Kaduna state, by the Nigerian army.
