Adewale Omirin
The Speaker of the Ekiti State House of Assembly, Dr Adewale Omirin has alleged that the governor of the state, Mr. Ayo Fayose has freezed the account of the assembly, Nigerian Tribune reports.
Fayose and the Speaker has been at loggerheads since the inception of the Governor’s administration. While Fayose is a member of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), the speaker and majority of the members belong to the All Progressive Congress (APC).
Fayose had earlier accused the members of the assembly of planning to make the state ungovernable and carrying out a plot by leaders of the APC. Fayose’s also alleged that the assembly planned not to screen any of his commissioner-nominees nor approve their nominations.
But Omirin, on Wednesday, through a statement by his media aide, Mr. Wole Olujobi, alleged that the state House of Assembly was being harassed and intimidated by the state government, saying “Governor Fayose’s reactions to refusal by APC members to dump their party for PDP are going beyond approved standards of modern governance.”
The speaker denied the allegation that the House of Assembly constituted a stumbling block to Fayose’s bid to constitute his cabinet, saying “the standard practice is to present the list of the nominees in the plenary while the nominees will follow with the submission of their credentials. They will be screened before confirmation.”
Omirin also said the governor was informed about the subsisting court case on the local government as responsible for the assembly’s refusal to accept his request to reconstitute the local councils.
He claimed that, “police and PDP thugs, in the wee hours of Wednesday, stormed and ransacked the home of Mr Kayode Fasakin representing Ekiti West constituency II, Kehinde Boluwade and Olaseinde Ogunrinde, all APC members.”
According to him, Fayose reacted to their action by allegedly “freezing the bank accounts of the House of Assembly” and warned that “the governor will have himself to blame if he continues in his anti-democratic conducts.”
The Chief Press Secretary to Fayose, Mr. Idowu Adelusi in his response to the allegation on behalf of his boss, said “the allegations are very untrue,” saying that “Governor Ayo Fayose has not ordered the freezing of account of the State House of Assembly and neither has the governor asked anybody to either insult or assault the speaker.”
Adelusi added that “the speaker is only playing politics and, in the process, maligning Governor Fayose,” adding that “the speaker should understand that today, Fayose is his governor, and the office is sacred.”
