Ladi Sani Moses was a 27-year-old lady full of life and always of good behavior, according to her neighbours, but one knock on the door of her parents’ house at the old Nigeria Prison Service Yard in Wadata, Makurdi, Benue State on the evening of Wednesday, November 4, began a process that cut short her life.
An admirer, who would later prove to be Ladi’s nemesis, visited her home about 7pm on that fateful day, asking to have a word with her.
Rather than have a word with the ex-student of Government Secondary School, Marit Barkin-Ladi in Plateau State, the admirer, whose name was given as Simon Elemuna, attacked and bathed Ladi with a substance suspected to be corrosive acid for reasons unknown.
Family sources, however, said the supposed boyfriend was only an admirer who had continued to mount pressure on his victim into accepting his love proposal.
The incident left Ladi in agonizing pain which she endured for a few days at a private hospital in Makurdi after which she was referred to the Federal Medical Centre (FMC) in the Benue State capital for secondary attention.
She finally gave up the ghost on Monday, exactly five days after as a result of the degree of burns she suffered from the acid bath.
Confirming the incident, the Benue State Police Spokesman, ASP Matthew Oku, said Elemuna, popularly called “Baba” and resident at North Bank in Makurdi, was arrested at 3:00am on the same night he attacked the late Ladi.
ASP Oku said the suspect was arrested in a Port Harcourt-bound vehicle at the Wurukum Park, in an apparent bid to escape justice.
The police spokesman said investigation was still ongoing, just as he also confirmed the death of the victim.
Mrs. Saratu Sani, mother of the late Ladi, tearfully alleged that Elemuna had earlier threatened to deal with her daughter for rejecting his love advances.
