FG Needs N5trn To Complete 8,000 Abandoned Projects

             Former Director of National Planning Commission (NPC), Alhaji Nazifi Abdullahi Darma, has revealed that the Federal Government requires over five trillion naira (N5trn) to complete over 8,000 abandoned projects across the country.

Darma, who made the revelation while speaking at a workshop on “Entrepreneurship in Tertiary Education Curriculum” organised by the Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida University (IBBU) Lapai in Minna, Niger State, said a recent survey of teams from the commission on some projects executed by the FG showed that states and local governments were not even aware of existence of such projects in their areas.

Darma who is also an Economics lecturer at the University of Abuja lamented that majority of the projects have been abandoned since 2009.

Expressing doubt over the likelihood of their completion, he blamed lack of collaboration between the three tiers of government and communities, where the projects were sighted, for the neglect.

He said, “Over 800 water projects and dams executed by the federal government are unable to serve the local people due to difficulties in reticulation and if the state governments are involved, they would collaborate to ensure that water gets to the people.”

He cited some water and dam projects that were unable to serve the local people due to what he called “lack of collaboration between the Federal and state governments and non-awareness of the project by benefiting state authorities.”

According to him, “If the state and local governments were involved in these water projects, they would have collaborated and ensured that water gets to the people.”

He called on the Federal Government to formulate a national policy on innovation as well as set up a national implementation council on innovation development to drive entrepreneurship development.

While advocating a special allocation for the funding of innovative ideas, the university lecturer stressed the need to develop a curriculum that would promote specialisation based on entrepreneurial innovations.
