The Interview
Sony Picture's film The Interview earned 15 million dollars in online sales over the holiday weekend, making the controversial comedy the studio's number one online movie of all time.
The Interview was rented or streamed through platforms such as GooglePlay, Microsoft’s Xbox Video and YouTube Movies more than 2 million times in four days, Sony said in a statement late Sunday.
After earlier saying it would not host the movie, Apple changed course Sunday and announced it would make it available on iTunes.
The move by the studio to make The Interview available online came after the decision by most major cinema chains in the United States not to show the film in the face of threats of violence.
The row over the film about a CIA plot to assassinate the leader of North Korea began with a cyber-attack on Sony last month.
The hackers then threatened to attack movie theatres showing the film.
The FBI last week blamed North Korea. North Korea has condemned The Interview as an act of aggression and praised the Internet assault on Sony, but denied any involvement.
The film opened Christmas Day in 300 smaller independent cinemas across the United States and earned 2.8 million dollars, according to The Hollywood Reporter. More than 2,000 theatres were originally set to show The Interview.
